What is Direct secure messaging and who is using it?

The Direct Project is a federal initiative for standards-based healthcare communications, with the goal of enabling communications among all healthcare providers and patients. While some solutions do not support the exchange of secure content outside of their own platforms, SES empowers you to communicate with any physician or patient with a Direct email address in a way that is HIPAA and HITECH compliant. Meaningful Use Stages 2 and 3 require the ability to send transition of care documents (CCDs) using secure messaging and most healthcare providers, EHRs and HIEs nationwide have the ability to send and receive Direct messages. Read about our Direct messaging products.

What is Meaningful Use and why is it important?

Under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, health care professionals and hospitals may be eligible for incentive payments when they use Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology to meet Meaningful Use objectives, with the goal of having information follow a patient through transitions of care and interactions with providers, hospitals, payers and HIEs. Meaningful Use Stage 1 – certification requires secure provider-to-provider messaging of patient information. Meaningful Use Stage 2 – certification requires the use of Direct messaging to support transitions of care and transmission of clinical summaries to third parties. Meaningful Use Stage 3 – certification requires the use of secure messaging to sent transition of care messages and other clinical information, support for bi-directional patient communications and more.

Complete Stages 1-3 with Direct Messaging through Secure Exchange, an ONC-certified HISP (Health Information Service Provider). SES offers a cost effective way to meet Meaningful Use requirements for exchanging CCDs and enabling Patient View, Download and Transmit.

Using Secure Exchange you can package a wide variety of structured patient data as required for Meaningful Use, including the following: Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), Continuity of Care Document (CCD), Clinical Data Repository (CDR), Problem Lists, Allergies, Diagnostic Results, Procedures, Medications and more.
