What is Direct secure messaging and who is using it?

The Direct Project is a federal initiative for standards-based healthcare communications, with the goal of enabling communications among all healthcare providers and patients. What is Meaningful Use and why is it important?

Under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, health care professionals and hospitals may be eligible for incentive payments when they use Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology to meet Meaningful Use objectives, with the goal of having information follow a patient through transitions of care and interactions with providers, hospitals, payers and HIEs. Meaningful Use Stage 1 – certification requires secure provider-to-provider messaging of patient information. Meaningful Use Stage 2 – certification requires the use of Direct messaging to support transitions of care and transmission of clinical summaries to third parties. Meaningful Use Stage 3 – certification requires the use of secure messaging to sent transition of care messages and other clinical information, support for bi-directional patient communications and more.

How do I get started with Secure Exchange?

Step 2: Register. If you are eligible for Secure Exchange products through a hospital, EHR, HIE, payer or other healthcare network, you may be able to register via their website. If not, contact us for help signing up.

Step 3: Start using Direct secure messaging! If you are using SES Online, you may access your email online. If you are using SES SMTP, you may access your mail online, through Outlook, or on your phone or tablet. If you are using SES Connect, you will be able to access your messages inside your EHR, CDR, or other application.

What are the requirements for registration?

To Register as an Organization you must meet the following requirements:

    • Be authorized to send and receive private health care information
    • Have a connection to the Internet
    • Identify a Point of Contact (POC) for the Organization who will be responsible for approving individuals registering under the Organization

    • Have a connection to the Internet
    • Complete and confirm registration details
